Case studies

The Chair aims to create case studies in Private Equity, M&A, structured finance, and related fields. The cases are used in ESSEC Finance courses and distributed to Business Schools around the world via case clearing houses like ECCH. Case-studies are complete with teaching notes, spreadsheets and other pedagogical material.

Most cases start out as student term projects. These projects are an opportunity for students to develop knowledge on areas that interest them, meet PE professionals and develop industry contacts. Have an idea for an interesting case? Drop us a line.

The best student projects are selected to become cases and edited by a professional case writer with more than 12 years of experience in case-writing. The following cases are available:

  • Plenium Service Informatique

In early 2006, the CEO of a French IT services startup faces the challenge of buying out the firm’s founder and majority partner. The case describes the company and its business model, the structuring of the buyout, and the terms of the deal. The transaction featured a substantial amount of leverage (about 50% of the price), and a holding company structure eligible for tax integration. Students are asked to evaluate the price, check the debt capacity of the target, and value the tax benefits of debt utilization. The case also exposes students to the difficulties and risks involved in this kind of deal.
